[X-Newbies] IP addresses

Hi all,

Is it possible to assign a machine a fixed IP address (eg 10.0.0.6) and
connect to a network which issues addresses via DHCP?  Would this cause
any problems?

The only one I can think of is that if other machines connect, the router
might try to give them the address that I have, but I could get round
this by giving myself one within the same sequence  that is unlikely to
be used - say 10.0.0.88.
