[X-Newbies] Using airport card with linksys router?

This is the reply I got from linksys:
Ryan F.(14014): Regarding this concern about MAC wirelessly
connecting to the security enabled router - not only will you just
put the key whether WEP or WPA to it but there is a set of characters
that MAC uses before the WEP/WPA key.
Ryan F.(14014): You need to call MAC tech support to guide to the
process of entering the characters plus the WEP/WPA key.
What sort of characters are they talking about?
