For music and for photos (especially your own photos) I would definitely back them up on a removable media (in my case DVDs). That way I can safely save copies of my photos in a different location than the computer. I actually burn two copies of stuff I have created myself, one DVD (or CD) to keep near my workplace and one copy to keep in another location. I would do the same for music I had payed for.
