Typically, if a screen fails, as it did in my case, the screen will
simply black out. It remains partially lit/illuminated, but doesn't
display any information. I would guess that in my case, it might have
been the ribbon cable or connector, but I never took it in to get
fixed, since I had owned it for like three years. Got a new ibook.

Does it startup okay, then get lighter or does it remain light even
after a reboot?

Might be worthwhile to bring it in to get looked at/maintained if it
is still under warantee. If you have the available spare external HD,
get it backed up first.
