[X-Newbies] suddenly sick iMacG5

Hi

enjoy reading this list.

I have a problem with my iMacG5, about 2 years old.

Suddenly if I leave my computer in sleep and I return after an hour or so
I can move my cursor and click on an item but nothing happends.  I cant
click on restart – so shut it off with the power button.  When I try to boot
back up I get a startup chime but it boots to a blank white screen, which stays
there forever.  I turn it off and back on and usually get the white screen again.
Sometimes I have to do this 4 or 5 times before it boots correctly and works fine.
I have 512meg of ram and have added no software between the time it was running
fine and the time this started. 

Any help/ideas? I dont know what to do.  I cannot reset the pram on startups when the
white screen appears.
