[X-Newbies] Erase contents of hard disc

I have a clunky old iMac (1999). In the place where I insert the disk
if I look carefully (with a flashlight) I can see a tiny hole on the right
hand side where the disk goes in. If I insert a paper clip into that
hole, the disk in the the machine will eject. Hope this helps.
