Serial connection?

Being a Network Admin, I find it necessary to
sometimes have to use a serial cable to look at a
configuration of a switch or router.
How can I do this with a Mac since they never had a
9-pin serial connection?
Is there some kind of converter? What application in X
acts like HyperTerminal on the PC?
