Server Settings rejects password

This has happened to me twice in recent weeks on different servers: 
After weeks of flawless performance Server Settings rejects all 
administrative passwords, which Workgroup Manager and Server Status 
continue to recognize. In both cases remote root by ssh is disabled and 
nobody with local access has the admin passwords. IOW, it's highly 
unlikely the servers have been tampered with.

Any ideas on what could be happening? Is there any way to remind Server 
Settings what the correct passwords are?
