Custom Software Updates?

Is there any way to distribute software and updates via the Software 
Update program similar to the way Apple does it? I've been reading 
about NetInstall and it sounds as if it still requires the computer to 
boot into a NetBoot image that just replaces the Finder with the 
Installer application, runs the installer, and restarts again. Is there 
an easier way that doesn't involve multiple restarts?
