Restarting AppleFileServer

My AppleFileServer service crashes occasionally (on an eMac Jag 
system 10.2.8; the crash itself is related, I think, to a backup 
session from an OS 8.6 machine on my local network).

I can live with the crash, but I can't figure out how to get AFS 
restarted without rebooting the eMac.

I snooped around the terminal ("apropos restart") and came up with 
SystemStarter, which looks like it should do the job, acts like it 
does the job, but doesn't.

Any guidance much appreciated...
