.smi - Self Mounting Image has been around since MacOS 7.1

IIRC up until 2001 you could download 19 Mac OS 7.1 smi disk images directly from Apple. When written to a floppy the first disk booted with Appletalk enabled so you could do a network install from another machine. I remember getting my Colour Classic going this way.
