"Bad CPU type"

Never seen this error message. Does anyone know what could cause this?

[~/Projects/supernova/petsc/hlib] %% whole
tcsh: whole: Bad CPU type in executable.
[~/Projects/supernova/petsc/hlib] %% file whole
whole: Mach-O executable ppc

The "whole" is a program of mine, and for as far as I can tell every 
.o and .a file in it comes from the same gcc.
