Having explained that I now have it working. I put a line ... DirectoryIndex index.html index.php inside each VirtualHost directive block & that got it working. I don't understand why as this line is already in the <IfModule mod_php4.c> directive block & the php sites were working fine when I had it all on 127.0.0.1.
