Went to IMAP years ago.  Ran away screaming and cursing.  Will probably never go back.

For a good (read propeller-headish) GUI mail app, I highly recommend Bare Bones' Mailsmith.  I use it because it is text-only, has extremely powerful filtering capabilities, and fantastic AppleScript support which allows me to completely automate a number of very complex workflows.  No IMAP support, which suites me just fine.  I might like it better it if had integrated threading (there's an AppleScript that I use to gather threads and show them in a separate window), but probably not much.
