In this instance, you should not, and need not, change the root password. sudo is a utility which allows you to perform actions as if you were logged in as the root user, without the inherent risk of actually logging in as root. In the case mentioned above, the OP apparently either doesn't know his sudo password is the same as his login account, or he's forgotten his login account password, mostly likely because he's got auto-login enabled.
