I got it. They represent custom icons of _folders_ (or volumes). Indeed, if they have a custom icon you get that Icon^M file (and its apple double ghost ._Icon^M). Files store custom icons in the resource fork, but folders and volumes have no resource forks. I updated unmac to handle those Icon^M as well.
