Observation: you did not erase (or format) "the disks in the RAID" but  
you formatted the array. The array happens to be composed of those  
disks, but the operation was performed upon the single array, not upon  
the disks individually.

I point this out not to belittle you, but because it may be helpful  
sometime for you to be "thinking in RAID".
