WinAMP equivalent?

Is there an application equivalent to WinAMP?  I need something that 
can handle VBR MP3's down to about 24Kbps.  While iTunes is great, it 
isn't what I need, and from what I'm seeing it's killed off the 
competition.

While 'xmms' will do the job, I'm looking for something my wife can 
use where she doesn't need to run X-Windows.
