After resetting the .AppleSetupDone parameter and having a normal system, I have found that my root was not actually getting enabled via the CD. Now that I have an Admin user, I can now enable root properly. Once enabled, I get the Other User button in the List of Users. With that, I can enter 'root', its password, and all is as it should be.
