To complete the thread, after permissions were fixed I reinstalled 
Gimp.app and worked just fine.

Lesson learned for me. I had no idea "Repair permissions" was supposed 
to be something to be run, say, periodically to maintain permissions. I 
never used anything like this in previous Unix systems I worked with, 
though that does not mean they didn't need it.
