[X4U] DVD+R problem

For various reasons I would like to be able to play DVD+R on my 
computer but Apple's Superdrive does not read DVD+R nor does the system 
'see' the disk. I have a LaCie firewire DVD writer which according to 
the sepcs handles DVD+R's. In the early days of CDs one could attache 
an external CD drive to the mac and I wonder if there is some way in 
which the DVD player can be made to read from the external drive or is 
the DVD player blind to DVD+Rs as well Apple's system.

Any thoughts on this would be welcome.
