You probably bought copies of Panther.. and if they are legal copies, they can be passed along w/ the machine. You will get a new license with the new machines... If they aren't legal copies... consider your self slapped on the wrist. I'm not really sure what happens if you sell a machine that was upgraded via a Family license... Any lawyers around? It is probably in Apple's best interest for the machines to be given to their new owners with the current OS.. but the law doesn't follow common sense. I will note, however, that 10.1.5 was not the most usable thing in the world, especially today. Many software packages won't support pre10.2, and some won't go back before 10.3. I have yet to upgrade my server to 10.3...
