Wanted: Free Text Editor

Q. is there any Free Text Editors that would in-fact,
be superior to apples built-in text editor. ? ( But Free )

My problem is that I not getting a true wysiwyg form it,
in other words, I choose a font, that is 48 points,
and print the doc, the doc prints out with about a 16 point font.

I did use appleworks, with no problems, but this issue
is directed to only apple built-in text editor.

The documents are in plain text,
was hoping there would be something better.
