By staying a year or two ahead in innovation they will continue to prosper. This innovation costs plenty in R&D therefore really Apple can't compete on price. But there is no reason too. I'll take the Lexus over the Chevy any day and pay for it, we still get what we pay for. For me and many others I know having used both platforms, Apple macintosh's will be our computer of choice. I even quit a company when they told me I had to stop using my Mac and use a PC for web development. Hmm they went out of business later but it was more likely poor management.
