I had my HD die on me a couple of months ago. It was making horrible clunking noises so I knew it wasn't long for this world. I urgently started copying stuff off of it, onto an external HD and onto my iPod. I didn't have an external drive with enough capacity to copy everything. I started with the Documents folder and ~/Library. I got all of that. Then I copied my iPhoto library. Check. Then I turned to my iTunes library. I got through the C's before the drive finally died. My point is, if it may die "any minute now", I would suggest prioritizing starting with your most irreplaceable data. It may be a pain to reinstall apps, but they should be a low priority. I was then able to return my IBM Travelstar 40 gig drive to Hitachi to warranty replacement.
