this is why i always have the terminal open. you can get real (read: 
not misrepresented by the gui) network device status:

	ifconfig en0 <-- for primary ethernet device

		(or)

	ifconfig en1  <-- for alternate ethernet device

		(or)

	ifconfig en0 down <-- turns primary interface off

		(then)

	ifconfig en0 up <-- turns primary interface

		(then)

	ifconfig en0 <-- to confirm
