Tried booting off an external drive with another OS and see if it still
does it?

15 inch Al-book, 512 MB RAM, OS X 10.3.8.
This weekend the 'book started behaving weirdly. I noticed it wouldn't
awaken from "sleep" and that the machine was VERY hot (sitting on my desk
with the screen black).
Subsequently, after forcing power off (holding down the power key until
the
machine went completely quiet, then re-booting), I noticed that when I TRY
to make it sleep, the screen goes black, the sleep LED near the latch
blinks
and then extinguishes rather than doing its "pulsar" routine. Moreover,
the
drive keeps spinning and the keys may stay backlit if the room is dark. I
can't "awaken" the machine from that state.
I reset the power manager, booted into open firmware and reset nvram, set
defaults, reset all, then reset pram, but even this didn't clear things
up.
I tried booting into another user's account. Same problem. Machine can't
sleep (same symptoms).
I have AppleCare. Does the machine need to take a trip?
As always, any/all suggestions on/off list greatly appreciated.
