[X4U] contextual menu 'create archive'

I recently used the contextual menu to take a folder and "create 
archive"  which creates a .zip file.
My question, is this cool as far as mac files with resource forks and 
the like ? do they survive ?
And my next question is if there is a command line equivalent to 
"create archive"  that I could use in scripts.. assuming these zip 
files maintain resource forks etc..
