So maybe it was a "single" sound instead of a "signal" sound.

In that case... Not sure what you should do. You might have more than one
issue going on -- RAM, based on the "sound" your machine makes, and a
thrashed disc, based on Drive 10 on a non-compatible OS.

How old is the PB, do you still have AppleCare on it?
