thanks to everybody who gave me suggestions when I had difficulty  
emplementing encryption to connect my powerbook with a Netgear router.
The answer was simple (as usual) when I found it:  I had not checked  
"Allow station to broadcast its name (SSID)."
When I made the router broadcast its name, I was able to select WPA- 
PSK on the router, and WPA Personal on Internet Connect.
And that worked.
