The problem has still not resolved itself. Following the steps you outlined above and clicking on "Look up topics easily" in the Help Viewer I do get the index (the alphabet of help categories). It takes about a minute; I presume that that window is being downloaded. (But even this doesn't work a second time--unless I go though all 4 steps again. Mac Help is a self-corrupting utility.) And even when I did get the index to come up, I was unable to get the index links to function. Clicking on a letter has no effect. Something very wrong here. OS X has a lot to offer, but between this problem with help and the fact that Spotlight recognizes less than half of my files, there is substantial room for improvement. Jim
