[X4U] Upgrading HD - Applecare

The current discussion has prompted me to decide to upgrade the HD in  
my iBook - I bought the stock HD and I'm growing tired of constantly  
shuffling stuff to and from my external.

The problem - I'm currently covered under Applecare, and plan to  
purchase extended coverage within the next few months.

Do I need to resign myself to paying $$$ to have a new HD installed,  
or can I some how do it myself without voiding my Applecare.  I'd  
love a loophole.
