[X4U] How to config 'helper' apps?

How can I configure helper applications that I want to load when I 
click on a link in my browser?

For instance IRC, if I click on an IRC link in my browser, that when 
configured correctly, would launch my IRC client, opening the server 
and channel specified by the link.

I know how to do it in Windows, how do I do it in OSX.3.6?  Do I need 
some application to do this or is there some applet or something built 
into OSX?
