Which Macintosh website is that which you find worthless and requires a subscription? Apple's Knowledge Base is free. A quick search at <http://search.info.apple.com/> for "indexing" yielded this: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24976>, among other things. BTW, the index consists of two invisible files located at your drive's root level: .FBCIndex and .FBCLockFolder. One or both of those might be corrupted. Delete them and repeat the Index Now command.
