[X4U] surge protection/ knob and tube

Hi,

We've just moved into an older house with knob (sp?) and tube wiring.  
This older wiring lacks a ground.

We could upgrade the wiring itself, but that would be at least 5k.

I want to protect myself against surge damage, and just read that one 
could for about 500 bucks, have an electrician put in a device right at 
the panel where the electricity comes into the house.

Does anyone has experience or thoughts on this?
