Is this a Sharepoints setup thing or is it a Finder thing ... and if it's a finder thing, do you mean that, logged on as "fileshare," you selected the Lurch folder at the root directory, opened Get Info, and set the user, group and Others all to Read and Write? Which "group" was it, if that makes a diff? And then... I'd put all the files that I want people to run/have access to inside the Lurch folder? Like the FMPro database? The Version Cue project folders, etc.? Or do they go into "fileshare"s home folder. >For this . . . I mount it via IP so it's user:password at ip/Lurch . . >. I have set up a static IP on my fileserver for this reason. The user and password would be the remote Mac's username/password for their own home folder, or would it be the one for user "fileshare" on the server? I'm assuming the latter but just checking. I think I can get a static IP on the "server" because we're using a switch/hub with NAT. So it'd be something like 192.168.254.105. (the other macs are all the same except for .102, .103, etc.) Does that sound right? >This script is compiled as a stand alone application and set to run >at login on each machine that needs to connect to the fileserver. >When the laptops go to sleep the volume remains mounted and is >immediately available at the next login. sounds great! >I personally wouldn't use a laptop for this purpose . . .I would use >either a Mini or a used G4 for the purpose. Any reason in particular? Deskspace is at a premium so I don't want a tower and monitor or anything for this thing. Would probably go with a mini, but after small used LCD monitor and keyboard/mouse, it'd cost the same as a used G4 powerbook or ibook. >.a combination of PSyncX which does a daily Finder readable backup >to both another internal and and external drive as well as running >Retrospect to backup to the external FW drive . you mean this is what you use to back up the fileserver itself? What kinds of stuff do you keep on your fileserver, if I may ask ... curious. Also, why not use Retrospect to do a Finder readable backup (a Duplicate script) ... why use PsyncX? Thanks Neil for all the info. This is probably the way I'll go. AM
