I have no clue if this is a rumour or not, and what it means if it's 
true -- I don't have a crystal ball.

But there's one thing nobody here seems to remember. The core of Mac OS 
X is Darwin. And Darwin is _already_ available for x86 platforms, and 
has been for some time. Check it out for yourself.
