Brett, Sounds like your finder prefs are corrupted. Access the drive from another account or when booted from another drive (or from OS 9 if that is an option) and delete the file "/Users/youracctname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist". The Finder should recreate a fresh one when you reboot. This has cured the problem you've described for me on one occasion after a hinky OS update. Give it a try . . . can't hurt.
