[X4U] Word Documents with Photos and Art

Is there a way of viewing and/or extracting Microsoft Word documents 
from a PC on my Mac, short of buying the Mac version of Word? I'm 
running MacOS X 10.3.8. Both AppleWorks and TextEdit on my iBook will 
open the Word .doc file, but where the photos, etc., would be, there is 
nothing. The size of the file would indicate that there is more there 
than just text.
