They're talking about how much room there is left on your hard drive. It's storage space. That is not the same as RAM. If you have a 40 Gb hard drive, and you've only 500 Mb left available for use, you are already using up 98 ¾% of the available space. That is not nearly enough for standard operations on your computer.
