[X4U] Installing Panther on a ethernet network?

I have a problem with installing Panther on my brother-in-law's  iMac 
DV 400mhz. After updating the firmware, I can not install Panther. I 
suspect the internal CD drive might not be up to snuff and I am getting 
prompts that an external firewire CD can not be used as the start up 
disk. My idea now is to take the iMac to my home and hook it up to my 
PowerMac via ethernet and try the installation from my machine's cd 
drive. My question is this:

Can anyone give me advise how to network the two macs together (I run 
Panther, the iMac runs OS 9.2.1)?

Can anyone give me advise how to do an install via the network?
