[X4U] Any way to force a spotlight index update?

Does anybody know of a way to force an update of Spotlight indexing?

I have several external firewire drives, and notice that neither  
spotlight or command-F searches will show up files that I KNOW are  
present on one of the drives.

I've seen posts on macnn and macfixit regarding this, but nobody has  
any suggestions about how to force a spotlight update.

any suggestions?
