Well, daing didn't I give bad advice.

I thought you could choose HFS+ for one partition and MS-DOS for the other 
in Disk Utility and gave that advice to the list... absolutely not so!

I think you mean "is not an option supported by Disk Utility", in 
Panther, at least.

I absolutely fail to see how using the command-line to achieve the 
desired results is a "hack".
