I have also heard good things about Netgear and seen mixed reviews of Linksys.

*However*, FWIW, I have been running a WRT54G utterly without issue 
for about 6 months now.

It connects to a DSL modem and I use both its wired and wireless 
features with a pretty mixed LAN (OS 8.6, 9.x, 10.2.8, Windows NT4, a 
network printer and a web/mail server all behind the WRT54G's 
firewall).
