I am ashamed to say, but the answer is a lot easier than that.   
Mail>Preferences>Mailbox behaviors and just make sure that the  
selection of "Delete sent mail after one day" is NOT selected.
I must put up my hands and admit, that when all else fails, RTFM.  I  
can only excuse my behavior by saying I am a Mac newbie.
