[X4U] PowerBook G4 missing startup chime?

I have recently noticed that the startup chime on my PowerBook G4 no  
longer occurs when I  boot the machine. After scouring the 'net, I  
have come up with a few ideas, but none have worked.

This article seemed promising, but didn't work. I have also tried  
zapping the PRAM (apple-option-p-r) a couple of times, to no avail.

If it matters, it's  15" PB G4 1.25GHz running Tiger 10.4.3.
