[X4U] Weird Mail problem

I tried removing Envelope Index from User/Library/Mail.  When I  
restarted Mail, it Imported all
my messages and built a new copy of Envelope Index.  I thought that  
had cured the fault but
I have tested Mail again now, and the problem is still there:   
messages from my family don't show up in the
inbox.

which bit of Mail is wonky?
