The problem seems to be iPhoto loading a massive amount of information into RAM, I think the reason why it gets so slow is that it's having to swap to disk. Once I close out of iPhoto (assuming the machine doesn't crash/lock up first), I suddenly have about 3/4th's of my 1.5GB Physical RAM free.
