You would be wise to get a print of a pix from a 5 mp camera and a similar one from an 8 and see what differences you can detect. If you plan to print very large pictures or plan to crop radically, the difference in mps might be worth while. Or if you plan on doing something where that amount of definition is specified, like submitting to National Geographic. Saving to TIFF format rather than JPEG probably makes more difference than more mps over 5. The most important device on a digital camera that makes the biggest difference in photo quality is the nut on the shutter button. Peter
