No idea what causes it. More concerning for me is that the loginwindow process does the same thing. This usually happens when I log into my account after the PowerBook's been rebooted. It hangs before launching all of my login items, which is how I first noticed that something wasn't right. This has happened to me even with a very fresh install of the OS (ie. old enough for me to have added some login items, but not much older than that).
